We are a part of Sam Houston State University and dedicated to preserving the memory of Sam Houston (1793-1863) and his times on a fifteen-acre complex.

OPERATIONS AND WALKING TRAILS: 

Beginning 7/22/24:  The south gallery of the museum is closed, and west gallery is partially closed to the public.  The south gallery remains under construction from damage sustained during the May storms.  The west gallery is getting a new exhibit!  Sam Houston’s “Executive Mansion” is planned to be installed from July 22-28.  During these two gallery closures, we will have free admission.  The north gallery will remain open, and staff will be on hand to talk about what you are missing about Sam Houston in the closed galleries and what is coming.  Thank you for your patience during this time!  As always, the museum grounds and historic homes will be open and available to see or just hanging out enjoying our green space; except for our wilderness trail, connecting the museum grounds to the Walker Education Center, because it washed out in May.

In May, we had multiple, catastrophic rainstorms through Huntsville.  A couple of our buildings sustained water damage from roof leaks and flooding while some of our trails washed out.  We are still in the process of figuring out repair schedules, so at any given time we may have to close a building or gallery.  At the same time, we have an exhibit undergoing renovations that may require that gallery to close.  We are sorry about these interruptions that may occur, especially during the summer when families are on vacation.  We will do our best to still make your experience at the museum a good one! 

TRYING TO FIND US: One thing staff has noticed more and more, visitors are relying on some sort of map app on their phone to get to the museum complex causing some confusion over where to park and start your visit. There are three locations you can check-in, pay admission and grab a museum map:

• Sam Houston Memorial Museum (1836 Sam Houston Avenue)
• Wigwam Neosho Museum Store (located in the center of the Museum Grounds, next to the Steamboat House)
• Katy & E. Don Walker, Sr. Education Center (1402 19th Street)

WHERE TO PARK: Limited parking is available by the Sam Houston Memorial Museum and Wigwam Neosho Museum Store while there is plenty of parking available at the Katy & E. Don Walker, Sr. Education Center. You are welcome to park either inside the museum grounds, if spaces are available, or at the Education Center – just keep in mind that our museum grounds are spread out over fifteen acres and there will be a bit of walking!  Bus and RV Parking is available at the Walker Education Center.
