In 2017, the 85th Legislature of the State of Texas approved a resolution introduced by Representative Ernest Bailes for the creation of the Sam Houston Republic of Texas Presidential Library at Sam Houston State University. This resolution honors Sam Houston’s contributions in shaping the state as well as his serving as the first and third president of the Republic of Texas and recognizes the unique attributes of the Sam Houston Memorial Museum.
With this designation, the staff at the Sam Houston Memorial Museum took time to figure out the direction it wanted to take. On October 22, 2021, in honor of Sam Houston’s inauguration as the first elected President of Texas, the museum announced its plans for the Sam Houston Republic of Texas Presidential Library.
In August of 2022, the Texas State University System Board of Regents at their regular quarterly meeting approved the Sam Houston Memorial Museum to change its name to the Sam Houston Memorial Museum and Republic of Texas Presidential Library.
Moving forward, the goal of the Sam Houston Republic of Texas Presidential Library will be to compile, conserve and share – both online and in person, documents related to Sam Houston and his career in an effort to spur ongoing research into the life and times of one of the most interesting politicians in American history. In addition, you’ll see updates to our existing galleries to better incorporate Houston’s story as two-time President of Texas. It’s truly an exciting time at the Museum!
