The Sam Houston Memorial Museum and Republic of Texas Presidential Library complex is situated on 15 acres of the original property owned by General Sam Houston and his family from 1847 - 1858.  We are located on the corner of Sam Houston Avenue and 19th Street, directly across from Sam Houston State University.

The Steamboat House is periodically opened to the public to access the inside.  Please check under Events to find out when this opportunity arises.

Museum Grounds

  • Sam Houston Memorial Museum

    The museum is the most distinctive landmark on the grounds.  It contains Sam Houston's artifacts and provides permanent exhibits on events surrronding his life.

  • Roberts-Farris Cabin

    An original cabin from Walker County that houses Sam's Mercantile, an exhibit that highlights Sam's younger years working in the family store.

  • Guerrant Cabin

    An orginal cabin from Walker County.

  • Bear Bend Cabin

    Supposedly Sam Houston's hunting lodge.  Originally located near Lake Conroe and moved to the museum grounds in 2010.

  • Raven's Pottery Shed

    The pottery shed is used for monthly kick wheel pottery demonstrations.  See events for the demonstration schedule.

  • Sam Houston's Law Office

    This cabin functioned as Sam Houston's unofficial office during his tenure as a U.S. Senator.

  • Woodland Home

    This home was built by Sam and Margaret Houston and lived here from 1847-1859.  Four of their eight children were born in the home.  It is located on its original site.

  • Eliza's Kitchen

    A replica of the Houston kitchen, erected on the original site.  It is a popular attration where hearth cooking demonstrations are featured.

  • Joshua's Forge

    The blacksmith shop is named in honor of Joshua Houston, who was the blacksmithg and factotum for the Houston family until emancipation.

  • Wigwam Neosho Museum Store

    Centrally located on the grounds, the museum store has Texas-inspired gifts and souvenirs for all ages!  The store is open during museum hours or you can shop our online store: Wigwam Neosho Museum Store.  Contact the store manager if you have questions by email at mlb044@shsu.edu.

  • Steamboat House

    The Houstons lived in the house after they returned to Huntsville in 1862.  This is where Sam spoke his last words on July 26, 1863.  The house was moved to the museum grounds in 1936.

  • Walker Education Center

    The Katy & E. Don Walker, Sr. Education Center houses an exhibit gallery with rotating exhibits, guided tours begin here, and the Gibbs Conference Hall (on the lower level) is a rental venue that serves the community.  (This is not the main museum.)
