Come Explore Texas History Firsthand
At the Sam Houston Memorial Museum and Republic of Texas Presidential Library, students and adults alike can experience our rich Texas history and explore the legacy of General Sam Houston through historic buildings and demonstrations provided by knowledgeable historic interpreters, dressed in 19th-century clothing.
We offer groupd tours for public, private, and homeschool groups as well as organizations of all ages.
Types of Tours
School tours include visits to the historic homes on the museum grounds (Woodland Home and Steamboat House), the Main Museum, and a minimum of two demonstrations.
Available demonstrations may include hearth cooking, black powder, fire starting, 19th century toys and games, fiber arts/textiles, and blacksmithing.
School tours are geared toward 4th and 7th grades, but all grades and ages are welcome.
Plan to spend a minimum of 1.5 hours from start to finish.
The museum offers tours designed for adult and senior groups all year long.
Walking is required across gravel paths and uneven terrain, and in some areas, the ability to climb steps is required to see every room of a historic home. Wheelchair access is available for most, but not all, of the tour areas.
Our tour consists of a short 15-minute film about Sam Houston in our Katy & E. Don Walker, Sr. Education Center, guided visits to the Steamboat House where Sam Houston died, the family's Woodland Home, Sam Houston's Law Office, and Eliza's Kitchen before visiting the Sam Houston Memorial Museum.
If you are interested in seeing a historic demonstration as part of your visit, please let us know when booking your tour. Available demonstrations may include hearth cooking, black powder, fire starting, 19th century toys and games, fiber arts/textiles, and blacksmithing.

If you are unable to visit us in Huntsville due to time or travel constraints, we are still capable of providing a quality experience for your group.
Utilizing a combination of YouTube (for tours through our historic houses) and either Zoom or Google Meet (for live interaction), you can see much of the museum and still have live access to one of our knowledgeable staff about all things Sam Houston.
There is a small fee for virtual tours. Inquire with our education department.
We welcome homeschool groups and families throughout the year. However, during the spring and fall we do offer a day designated for homeschool groups with historical demonstrations and living history interpreters.
